Recent Projects

Dalberg designed and structured a $500 MM African Development Bank (AfDB) debt facility to support the scaling of renewable energy providers.
Dalberg advised on market positioning and capital structure of the facility, management structure, domiciliation, and supported fundraising and fund manager recruitment processes. The facility was designed to provide debt to off-grid companies and to small-scale power producers.
Afterwards, AfDB’s board made a $100 MM commitment.

Dalberg designed and launched Convergence, the world’s first blended finance platform that helps public and private investors connect to execute transactions in emerging and frontier markets. Convergence includes an investor match-making platform, grant funding for the design of innovative new financing products, and knowledge tools to build investors’ understanding and ability to utilize blended finance.
Dalberg Global Development Advisors was appointed by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) to conduct an initial market assessment of the landscape of gender lens investing in Asia and Theory of Change for the Women’s Impact Fund, a USD 100 million impact investment fund that aims to increase positive gender outcomes in Asia.
Dalberg supported a Social Venture Fund Manager in refining their strategy and developing pitch materials for a new global impact investing fund to be presented to their board and other LPs, before going into the market for fundraising. The fund is currently investing in India, Brazil, and East Africa with a focus on unmet consumer needs in emerging markets.

Dalberg supported the IFC to carry out a mapping and a competitiveness analysis of six agricultural value chains (coffee, cocoa, cashew, palm oil, cotton and livestock) as well as inputs, in selected countries in East and West Africa. The Dalberg team undertook extensive primary and secondary data collection and analysis to map the value chains, assess their competitiveness through establishing regional and international benchmarks, and recommended specific investment and advisory opportunities.
Dalberg designed and helped launch the Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria (FAFIN) on behalf of KfW and the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The fund concept emerged from an assessment study of the Nigerian agricultural finance market by Dalberg, where we found the biggest gap in growth capital for small and mid-sized enterprises. Dalberg was then engaged to design a growth capital fund, developing its strategy and structure, supporting fund manager recruitment, and developing operational documents. We also helped facilitate fund incorporation and early fundraising processes.

Dalberg supported a multi-national oil and gas corporation in identifying investable opportunities in the energy sector in Kenya.
Dalberg conducted a landscape opportunities analysis, created a map of relevant stakeholders, prioritized opportunities based on a set of criteria, and developed detailed investment proposals for shortlisted opportunities.
Dalberg is working with UBS Optimus Foundation, BAT, MSDF and Tata Trusts on the design and performance management of the “Quality Education India” Development Impact Bond.
Dalberg identified the most suitable NGOs, designed the financing model and coordinated different stakeholders.
Dalberg designed a performance management framework and will be working with NGOs to diagnose potential challenges in interventions, and is planning to develop recommendations around addressing those challenges.
Dalberg evaluate FMO’s investment in Accion Frontier Investment Fund (AFIF) at three levels: FMO's investment in AFIF, AFIF's investment into portfolio companies, and the portfolio companies' impact on small businesses.
Dalberg analyzed the landscape of fintech innovations in Mexico, South Africa and India, interviewed key stakeholders to distil key learning, and undertook a quantitative and qualitative survey of end users.
The evaluation will be used by FMO to inform its fintech strategy going forward and to share learnings and impact with the broader audience.
The Union for International Cancer Control and the Healthy City Partnership engaged Dalberg to explore and design the Healthy Cities Fund, with the objective of financing city-level health infrastructure in low and middle-income countries. The Dalberg team undertook a market assessment, including desk research and interviews with different health financing experts globally to identify current sources and uses of health infrastructure financing, financing needs and gaps and barriers that inhibit investment. We were then engaged to develop different design options for the fund’s strategy and structure.
Dalberg conducted a market due diligence of a leading pay-as-you-go solar homes system company.
Dalberg's analysis focused on three areas: the size of the addressable market, the competitive landscape, and the target company's strategy to boost revenue and profitability.
Dalberg provided perspectives on each of these taking into account a 5-year time horizon, with a slightly longer-term view on the addressable market.
Dalberg created a database of impact investments in India, segmented investors based on impact intent and measure impact, and co-authored a comprehensive landscape report detailing the key trends and challenges in the sector from the supply-side and demand-side, and in the ecosystem.
The final report was disseminated by the GIIN and Dalberg at various international fora, and is being used as a public resource published on the GIIN website, directed towards financial institutions, impact enterprises, policy-makers, and the general public.
Dalberg developed a segmentation framework of SGBs and formal SMEs in frontier and emerging markets.
Dalberg conducted a supply- and demand-side literature review, held over 50+ interviews with a variety of financial service providers, including debt, equity, and mezzanine investors, conducted a workshop at Sankalp, and conducted human-centered-design research in Mumbai to better understand how behavioral traits affect external financing needs.
