Advancing Energy Access: The 2024 Off-Grid Solar Market Trends Report

With 660 million people projected to remain without Tier 1 electricity access by 2030 and a growing 1.6 billion living in weak-grid areas, off-grid solar (OGS) solutions are critical to bridging the gap. In 2023 alone, the sector served 561 million people, driving 55% of new connections in Sub-Saharan Africa from 2020–2022. As the least-cost option for nearly 400 million people requiring electrification by 2030, OGS also provides sustainable alternatives to unreliable grids, supporting income generation, health, and education in underserved communities.

The 2024 edition of the Off-Grid Solar Market Trends Report, published by the World Bank/ESMAP and GOGLA with support from Dalberg, provides vital insights for investors, industry professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders. The report expands its scope beyond solar energy kits to include productive-use energy products like solar water pumps and refrigerators, as well as electrification of social infrastructure such as schools and healthcare facilities. By powering households, businesses, and essential infrastructure, the OGS sector is poised to transform global energy access efforts.

For over a decade, the biennial Off-Grid Solar Market Trends Report has been the leading resource for understanding the OGS sector. The 2024 edition builds on this by examining the state of the OGS market, key trends in supply, demand, finance, and policy, and exploring the sector’s evolving role in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
