Schools across India were closed in mid-March 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, impacting approximately 286 million students between the pre-primary and upper secondary school level. This is in addition to the more than six million children who were already out of school prior to the Covid-19 crisis. Dalberg worked with UNICEF to understand the effect of pandemic-related school closures on learning among students in India, especially those from more vulnerable communities. The resulting report includes key insights about student learning during a crisis situation as well as recommendations to meet short-term needs and drive policy change for the longer term to build a more resilient education system in India.
