As global populations grow and environmental pressures intensify, the challenges of agricultural productivity and food security demand urgent attention. Dalberg Advisors Partner Sunru Yong addressed these critical issues in a recent talk as part of the Knowledge Seminar Series, held in collaboration with the Office of Development Affairs in Abu Dhabi.

The Current State of Agriculture and Food Production

Agriculture today presents a mixed picture of progress and disparity. While global cereal production per hectare has tripled over the last 50 years, this growth is unevenly distributed. Regions like North America, East Asia, the EU, and South America have surpassed global averages, while South Asia and Africa lag significantly behind.

Yong attributes this gap to unequal access to key agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, quality seeds, and irrigation. Farmers in poorer regions face additional environmental stresses, including degrading soils, water scarcity, and the escalating impacts of climate change. Ironically, the countries most vulnerable to these changes are often those least responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, while major contributors are better equipped to adapt.

Adding to this strain are rising food prices and limited access to healthy diets in developing regions, leaving millions unable to afford basic nutritional needs.

A Farmer-Centered Approach to Solutions

While there’s no single solution to these interconnected challenges, any effective strategy must prioritize small-scale farmers, who make up 84% of the global farming community and bear the brunt of agricultural hardships.

Among the promising interventions are:

  • Access to Climate Data: Equipping farmers with localized data to build resilience against climate variability.
  • Affordable Irrigation Solutions: Providing modest, scalable tools like solar-powered water pumps to reduce reliance on increasingly erratic rainfall and costly diesel systems.
  • Philanthropic Capital: Leveraging funding to offset the risks associated with adopting innovative solutions and fostering widespread adoption.

These measures, while not exhaustive, represent an evolving toolkit to improve agricultural productivity, support farmers, and advance global food security.

The Bigger Picture: Livelihoods and Sustainability

The broader stakes are not just about improving livelihoods for millions of farmers but also about ensuring the sustainability of our planet. Addressing agricultural productivity and food security is a critical step toward a more equitable and resilient future.
