In India, over 47% youth¹ are unemployed or self-employed, primarily due to a lack of opportunities. Skilled youth fare only marginally better—one in three is unemployed.² Moreover, a 2023 report measured rural and urban female labor force participation rates at 36.6% and 23.8%, respectively, compared to male participation rates of 78.2% and 74.7%. The transition from skilling programs to job placement and retention presents a considerable challenge; even high-performing training providers see only 10–30% of their enrolled candidates remain in jobs three months after placement.³ To address these challenges, a consortium of influential public and private sector stakeholders has come together to launch the Skill Impact Bond (SIB). This four-year initiative, which leverages private sector resources, is the first development bond in India’s skilling landscape and represents an innovative approach to financing skilling and employment endeavors. -

In Sub-Saharan Africa, the devastation caused by malaria is unmatched, especially among children. The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights the disproportionate burden this region faces: a staggering 94% of malaria cases globally (233 million) and 95% of related deaths (580,000) reported in 2022 alone. The introduction of the WHO-approved malaria vaccine heralded a new dawn in the battle against this endemic menace. Yet, the deployment of this life-saving intervention is riddled with challenges, from accessibility hurdles to integration with existing health systems. In early 2024, Dalberg, in collaboration with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, embarked on a journey to address these challenges through the Malaria Vaccine Technical Assistance Program. -

Savings and credit cooperatives (SACCOs) allow unbanked small-scale farmers and producers, especially women in the rural areas of Kenya, to access credit, while Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) help bridge the gap between farmers and output markets. The World Bank, Amtech, KALRO, CGAP, and Dalberg are working together to build the capacity of SACCOs and FPOs in Kenya and particularly how they serve rural women. Three mechanisms of change will be employed: (1) Increasing rural women’s use of financial and non-financial services leveraging the national network of digitized and insured SACCOs; (2) Strengthening access to markets by providing linkage to digitized FPOs and climate-smart agtechs and agribusinesses; and (3) Ensuring integrated service provision that includes access to inputs, information, extension and capacity building, and digital technology to enhance agricultural production. All partners will leverage their mandates, expertise, and networks to strengthen approximately 1500 SACCOs and FPOs through national and county program coordination units to service 3 million farmers, 66% of whom are female, in the 45 rural counties in Kenya.
