Summary

Access to safe and high-quality surgical care is critical to advancing global healthcare and improving the lives of millions of people around the world. Unfortunately, safe surgical care remains beyond the reach of far too many people. The Safe Surgery 2020 (SS2020) initiative has explored innovative models for expanding safe surgical care and has contributed valuable insights and ideas for improving surgical and health care systems.

Dalberg Media has been working with Dalberg Advisors and the GE Foundation on developing a communications and advocacy campaign to advance the discussion on access to and training in safe surgical care.

Dalberg Media has developed the www.safesurgery2020.org website and social media content as well as op-eds on the topic.

In 2020 the project concluded having trained over 2,900 healthcare workers in Ethiopia, Cambodia and Tanzania, launched two oxygen plants to improve access to oxygen for 40 medical facilities, made over 35 contributions to overall safe surgery body of evidence and implemented programs in 58 health facilities.
